Welcome to the New and Revised System Zoo, a FileMaker Pro¬ v2.3 database. Those of you who have visited before will notice the changes right away. (Thank you to all who offered comments and suggestions!) We have greatly expanded the number of entries and have included components of System 7.5.2. We have also changed the interface to make it more readable for those of you who have smaller screens. NEW: The layouts are essentially the same. The new feature to note is the RAM Size field in the Full View. We have used various methods to determine how much RAM the occupants of your System Folder occupy when active. These are NOT necessarily exact numbers and may vary depending on your computer. Many items have "unavailable" or "unknown" listed. This means we could not access the RAM information, either because we don't have the actual item any more or because it fails to show up in our tests.
New Buttons: In Full View, you will notice new buttons across the top. The up-and downward pointing triangles move you up and down in the list, so you don't have to leave the side bar open. The triangles with the lines on them advance you to the first or last entries. The Reset button finds all records, then sorts them. This brings back mysteriously disappearing fields. The Find button brings up the find mode, where you can search for specific entries. Once you've typed in your search criteria, hit the Find button again and it will search. The red and blue triangles will take you back to list and icon views, respectively (they are color coordinated to their respective buttons at the bottom of the screen). Thanks to Mikko J. The PassWord: Many have asked us about this. It does not hide any information. It exists merely to protect you from accidentally making changes to the entries. We did not want to just lock the entire thing because we figured that if anyone was determined enough they could crack the code and edit the entries themselves. (So, consider it an intentionally difficult backdoor.)
Blank Fields: From time to time, you will encounter blank fields. We were not able to get any information in those cases. Entries followed by a question mark are our best guess about what the item does. If the "Current Apple Software" screen (or the little box in the "About" screen) is blank, do a "Find All" (Command-J), then do a "Sort" (Command-S), and press "Return" or "Enter," this will bring it back. (Actually, we have added a button that does all of this- the shiny, red, candy-like button called 'Reset'.)
Sharing: We collected this information from all over, you may even recognize text from Read-Me's you've encountered. For this reason, we feel it wouldn't be right to charge $, etc., for this database. All we ask is that when you get, you SHARE it with others. Spread the word and start exploring and understanding your computer. If you wish to include this database on a CD, our permission is required first and this ReadMe must accompany the Zoo.
